Computer Help for Seniors (and Other Newbies)
Internet Shopping
People shop online in large numbers to save time and avoid crowded stores (not to mention gas).
Unfortunately, increased online shopping also provides cyberthieves with new potential victims.
To avoid problems with deliveries of Internet orders:
-
Carefully inspect any package before you sign for it. Reject it if you see damage. If you discover damage after delivery, note the tracking number and immediately inform the shipper and the vendor, which should file a claim.
-
Take lots of pictures, and keep all paperwork and packaging.
-
Last, think twice before purchasing expensive technology online.
One of the biggest problems with online purchases: you are not the shipping company's customer—the retailer is. That drastically limits your leverage in a dispute. If the package was damaged before shipment, that's between FedEx and the store. Damaged in transit? Still not your problem.
How to Deal With Internet Shopping Problems
-
Review your credit card statement as soon as possible after your purchase
-
Get online access to your statements. Address problems immediately.
-
The Better Business Bureau has a free service that will attempt to mediate a dispute between you and a merchant.
-
When contacting the company, talk to someone who can actually issue a refund or correct the problem.
-
Watch out for phony good reviews. Some sellers try to make themselves look good by posting glowing reviews under false identities. Amazon.com has solved the problem of made-up merchant reviews through its Real Names program. To review an item or merchant on Amazon, you must have purchased something there under a valid user name.

The grey market
The grey market (or gray market) usually refers to the flow of new goods through distribution channels other than those authorized or intended by the manufacturer or producer.
Grey market goods are not generally illegal. Instead, they are being sold outside of normal distribution channels by companies which may have no relationship with the producer of the goods. Frequently this form of parallel import occurs when the price of an item is significantly higher in one country than another. This situation commonly occurs with electronic equipment such as cameras. Entrepreneurs buy the product where it is available cheaply, often at retail but sometimes at wholesale, import it legally to the target market and sell it at a price which provides a profit but which is below the normal market price there.Gray market products are not intended for sale in the United States. Rather, they’re intended for sale overseas but are imported here by third parties.
But some companies won’t honor warranties for non-U.S. products. If the product fails, you could be out of luck. Also, menus could be in a different language. And units of measurement may differ from American products. I would avoid purchasing gray market goods.
