Email messages are generally not encrypted Email messages have to go through intermediate computers before reaching their destination, meaning it is relatively easy for others to intercept and read messages.

Many Internet Service Providers (ISP) store copies of your email messages on their mail servers before they are delivered.

The backups of these can remain up to several months on their server, even if you delete them in your mailbox.

The Safest Way to Open an Email Attachment

Right click on the attachment

Select <Save AS> in "My Documents"

Give it a Name

Click <Save>

Go to the file you saves in "My Documents"

Right click on the file name

Select <Run a Virus Scan> (be sure your anti virus program is up to date)

If no virus is found, it is safe to open the attachment
